Instead of killing yourself trying to find that next great business opportunity, take some time to enjoy one of the many spring skiing opportunities.
Whether you are looking for a great spring break getaway or just want to get in a few more runs before the warmth of summer rolls around, spring is a great time for you and your family to hit the slopes one last time.
Heading out of the high season, there are many advantages to skiing late in the season. Lift lines are shorter, crowds are smaller, the days are longer, and the sun is shining. Nothing is better than gliding down snowy slopes wearing only a t-shirt or light jacket! Also, many of the resorts discount lodging by as much as 30% to 40% during the spring.
So if you want to get out from behind your desk and take in some crisp mountain air, here are a few locations to consider.
Killington, Vermont
This world-class ski resort area has been known to stay open as late as mid-June. In spring, you can ski in the morning and take in a round of golf in the afternoon.
There is plenty of variety in Killington, with seven mountains that offer 200 trails, 32 lifts, and over 100 places to drink, dance, and dine. Slopes are suitable for anyone from beginner to advanced, and the Family Center caters to the kids.
Snowbird and Alta, Utah
The Snowbird/Alta ski area is only an hour from Salt Lake City, and has a seven-month-long ski season. That is longer than any of the ski resorts in the Rocky Mountains.
2,000 acres of groomed runs and powder provide plenty of room for the smaller spring crowds to stretch out. The powder in April is still as fresh as winter, the rates drop, and the weather is nearly perfect.
If you are a pure skier, check out Alta, which is off-limits to snowboarders. Snowbird, on the other hand, not only allows snowboarders but has some amazing facilities catering only to them.
Heavenly Valley
Located on the California/Nevada border, Heavenly Valley overlooks the impressive waters of Lake Tahoe. The view from the gondola as you ride to the top of the mountain has to be one of the best in the world, and there is still plenty of skiing to be found during the spring months. In fact, Heavenly has stayed open as late as the July 4th weekend during heavy snow years.
Slopes are open to skiers and snowboarders, and there is terrain for all levels of expertise. The snow is a bit icier than you might find in the Rockies, but overall, Heavenly offers a great skiing experience.
Besides the slopes, the Heavenly gondola is conveniently located among the many casinos and hotels in the town of Stateline, giving you access to a variety of food, gambling, and nightlife.
Anywhere in Colorado
The great Rocky Mountains provide the ultimate in skiing adventure. Some resorts may not drop their rates until after Easter due to Colorado’s popularity as a spring break hangout. On the other hand, think of all the world-class resorts you have to choose from: Vail, Aspen, Breckenridge, Beaver Creek, Keystone, Telluride, and Copper Mountain.
The best part is that most of them are within an easy drive from Denver, and you won’t believe just how soft the powder is.
So get out of that office and onto your skis. Your boss will understand, even if you are your own boss.
Killington Resort is scheduled to close April 13. The resort may extend the season depending on conditions.
